Google’s New Rule for Android Developers
What Exactly is This New Verification Rule?
Think of it like a KYC (Know Your Customer) for app developers.
Just like you need to provide your ID documents (like an Aadhaar or PAN card) to open a bank account, Google will now verify the identity of every developer who publishes apps on the Play Store.
In simple words, Google wants to know who is creating the apps that millions of people use every day.
Why is Google Doing This?
The number one reason is user safety.
The internet has a lot of scammers and hackers who create fake or harmful apps to steal data and money. Until now, many of these bad actors could hide their real identities.
With this new verification process, every developer’s identity will be on record with Google. This makes it much harder for someone to publish a harmful app and get away with it. This single step will make the entire Android ecosystem much safer and more trustworthy for everyone.
What Do You, as a Developer, Need to Do?
Okay, this is the most important part. What actions do you need to take? The good news is, for most developers, it’s very simple. There are two main steps involved.
Step 1: Identity Verification
This is the process of proving to Google that you are who you say you are.
But here’s the best part: If you already have a Google Play Console account, there is a 99% chance that you have already completed this step! When you signed up and paid the developer fee, you provided details that Google uses for verification. For most existing developers, you won’t have to do anything for this step.
Step 2: App Package Name Registration
Every Android app has a unique ID, like com.company.appname
. This is called the package name. Google will now require these package names to be registered.
But again, Google is making it easy: Google has stated that it will automatically register 98% of the apps that are already on the Play Store. You don’t have to do it yourself.
Manual registration will only be needed for a small number of apps, usually those that get most of their downloads from outside the Play Store (like from a developer’s own website).
The Most Important Question: When Does This Start in India?
This is the question on every Indian developer’s mind. So, listen carefully.
The new verification rule will begin in September 2026. However, it will only start in four countries:
- Brazil
- Singapore
- Indonesia
- Thailand
So, what about India?
The new policy is expected to be implemented in India in 2027 or later.
That’s right! You have plenty of time. There is no need to panic. Google has announced this early so that all developers are aware and can be prepared for the future. You have at least a year or more before you need to think about this.
Quick Summary (The 30-Second Recap)

- Why? To increase user safety and stop scammers.

We hope this clears everything up! This is a positive step for the Android community. For now, you can relax and keep building your amazing apps.
